The Thin Spread Line

A few things. When did the number 13 become unlucky? I just read that Apollo 13 transmitted the infamous "Houston, we have a problem" message on April 13, 1970. Crazy. And fear of the number 13 - do you know what that's called? triskaidekaphobia (I wonder if there is a phobia for REALLY long hard to pronounce words such as triskaidekaphobia).

For the past few months, I've just felt like I can't keep up with anything around me. I have a multitude of things going on and I feel as if I'm being spread paper thin. It's unfortunate because when I finally do find some time to accomplish one of the many things on my list, I feel as if I didn't do a good enough job because I wasn't given adequate time to complete the task to my own satisfaction. I'm trying to take a proactive approach to this problem by maintaining the big rocks mentality.

In other news, Ronda and I really cleaned up this year with income taxes. To make a long story short, we went to H&R Block in February and after 2.5 hours, they told us that we'd owe state and federal governments $1,500 overall. We then declined their service because, after all of that, they wanted to charge us $400. We procrastinated over the next two months, did our taxes ourselves last weekend, and found out that we'd be getting a REFUND of $400. Good stuff.

Also, we adopted a new baby boy this weekend. No, not one of flesh and bone - one of polished stainless steel and wood pellets. Yes, I'm talking about a new Traeger smoker. We broke it in last night with some cod and steak. The grill was not one of those "Hey, we got a tax refund so let's spend it on something NOW" types of things. We've been saving up for it since we moved here. It amazes me how some people see their tax refunds as free money. It's my hard earned money and I'm treating it that way.

I now leave you with a joke:

Q: What do you call a trash bag full of mutilated laboratory monkeys?

A: Rhesus Pieces.
